Heat and Hope: An Ode to Summer

Well, guys, it’s summer.

They’re forecasting thunderstorms. Humidity is up. Misquotes are biting. And my garden is already dead.

You should know that I am a terrible gardener. I plant things with ample hope, but I soon forget to water everything. This year, I had a couple of cucumber plants that were doing well before I went out of town and now everything is dried up.

But yesterday, my daughter planted a handful of watermelon seeds, and we still hope they will survive. Maybe we’ll get lucky and see some watermelons next year.

What is summer, but a season of hope?

Summer: a time when we get up early and stay up late and seek respite in the middle of the day. It’s a new season. The time when market days are almost unbearable, but we show up anyway because the produce is fine (thank goodness for gardeners who know what they’re doing!) and the bread bakes up well and we know that we can just put on sunscreen and bring our big jug of cold water, tarrying as we wish along the sidewalk.

It will be cold again before we know it. For now, albeit, summer is glorious.
